ROSY DAY RECAP BY ILLAWARA ROSE SOCIETY CHAIR

Saturday 1st November 2025 at Burnett's on Barney (Plant Nursery - 80 Barney St, Kiama)

The day was very successful even though we had a quick move to the Palm Pavillion from the shaded area which we originally had set up. Jill had done a beautiful display of roses brought in by IRS members, and the community who wanted to share their gorgeous and unique roses such as The RSL rose.

We had an information table with handouts, Neutrog info and photos, Jenny thank you for your help with setting up, ready for the visitors.

The morning started with Colin’s talk on pruning and rose care when the weather changed. As the shade cloth was not waterproof the decision was made by Elizabeth to move.  All the staff at the nursery was on hand to help move and set up in the Palm Pavilion. A big thank you to all that helped. Bringing extra chairs as more arrived for the Program we had advertised.  

Once set up Janet, Rosemary and Joanne commenced the Floral arrangement demonstration. Janet and Rosemary had brought in an elegant selection of roses, greenery and flowers to be used in the arrangements. The arrangements were given away to the visitors by raffle method (no money exchange) . We had 35 visitors watching and involved winning a beautiful arrangement. Joanne gave an informative talk on how to look after and use roses from your garden in arrangements and posies.

The day continued with Intan’s interesting talk on hybridising roses, thank you Intan. Next floral arrangements which involved members of the public assembling their own arrangement with the help of Joanne, Rosemary and Janet. Thank you to all the floral art ladies. Kristin and Jill were on hand to answer questions on rose care, thank you both.

Last session was on pruning and rose care with Colin leading the discussion. Thank you, Colin.

We had a variety of visitors throughout the day, many came from other societies, and we thank them for their support, local visitors and some who had been to our promotion at the Berry Garden Festival.
